Mark: Apprentice LGV Driver Teynham
Why did you choose and apprenticeship over a different career or further education?
I chose the apprenticeship purely based on the knowledge factor. I would be more attractive to other potential employers but I wanted to learn more in depth about the industry to enable me to do my job more efficiently and effectively. The last industry I worked in was constantly under threat due to the current market and as such I had no career prospects. I saw this as a great opportunity to gain more skills.
How did you hear about the Fowler Welch apprenticeship scheme?
I heard about it from a family member who currently works at Fowler Welch and highly recommended it.
Were there lots of opportunities locally for this type of apprenticeship?
No. I really struggled to find an apprenticeship like this which is why I took the opportunity to do this scheme.
What were you expecting when you first started the programme?
I came into the scheme with a very open mind and thought of it as a challenge. At first I thought it was a very daunting task but I was assured I would get all the help and support needed to fully understand my tasks and targets.
What support have you received through your training?
Within the short period of time that I have been on the scheme I feel that I have been able to approach anyone regarding the type of information and support needed. They have all been more than helpful and everyone has had a great attitude towards my apprenticeship.
What have you most enjoyed about being with Fowler Welch and your apprenticeship?
The opportunity and flexibility has been brilliant. Without this scheme I feel that I would not get another opportunity to gain life skills and qualifications and I feel that this has boosted my self confidence.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to enrol in a Fowler Welch apprenticeship?
If you ever get an opportunity then take it and give it 100% as you will get back what you put in – a fantastic career boost.
