Streamlining the Supply Chain - Contract Packing Services
At Fowler Welch, our attitude of listening, responding and delivering is one that we aim to follow through on for all customers, big and small, across all services and channels. The most recent example of how we have followed this ethos to create added value for our customers is the recent introduction of contract packing at our Heywood facility.
Around 18 months ago we were approached by a customer who was incurring significant logistics cost and unnecessary food miles of imported product that came in one configuration, a case of 24. This limited their sales opportunities as many of their customers wanted smaller case configurations for retail.
The process at the time involved products being delivered into our warehouse, stored, called off and transported to a third party for contract packing before returning the product to our depot for distribution. So, it made total sense to both us and the customer to bring everything under our roof and cut out the middle man.
We presented the client with a proposal to do just that. They accepted it and we invested in an ambient contract packing operation at our Heywood facility. We now manage the entire process from port to end user in one place, saving the client invaluable food miles as well as costs and potential mistakes along the way, making the entire process much more lean and efficient.
Since the introduction of this service, a number of existing customers have also profited from a range of bespoke contract packing services from re-sizing, shrink wrapping and pack re-sleeving, to product picking and gift packing. Since April this year, we have packed over 350,000 cases.
The aim of this service is to provide our customers with the complete solution. We are a one-stop shop where customers know they can trust the service and ensure their product gets to market in the right format and at the time their customers require.
The contract packing operation has already achieved a number of successes in creating a smoother supply chain. We are at the forefront of our industry for support and flexibility and will continue to stay there as our customer base grows.

The Heywood depot is BRC and BCMPA accredited and stands out against its competitors for running a range of services which allow this element of the supply chain to be as reactive as a temperature controlled chain.
