Fowler Welch Named Finalists in 2 Top Industry Awards

It is with great pride that Fowler Welch has been nominated for 2 awards at the 2020 Motor Transport awards; the prestigious “Haulier of the Year” and the “Training Award”.

For over 30 years, Fowler Welch has provided cost effective, flexible supply chain solutions for retailers, wholesalers, importers and manufacturers. We operate in line with our 4 key values;
• Delight the Customer
• Be Socially Responsible
• Maximise Efficiency
• Be an Employer of Choice.

We have a loyal customer base spanning both sides of the supply chain, with some of our customers having been with us since the start. It’s not only our long-standing customers that we want to do our best for, but all of them –big or small, old or new we want to delight them all. Fowler Welch ensures that the highest Quality and Food Safety Standards are at the core of all business activities and decisions. Our sites are all BRC Certified at Grade AA against the Storage and Distribution Global Standard, Issue 3.

We take a proactive approach to promoting the health, safety and wellbeing of all our colleagues extending far beyond legal requirements. The business provides seasonal campaigns and safety road shows to deliver to all or our colleagues.

In 2018 and 2020 our Environmental and Sustainability reports show we are making developments in several areas to provide sustainable solutions for the future, something we feel very passionate about. You can view the reports here.

Our fleet represents a huge investment, so it is vital that we make the right decisions. The replacement and procurement process are supported by a number of initiatives to ensure we really get the best deal for our company, our customers and the environment. In order to monitor our drivers’ performance we use high-tech telematics, this enables us to keep an eye on our fuel efficiency which we are pleased to say we have seen an 18% increase in MPG over the last 7 years. This also provides instant access to a host of support materials such as safe systems of work, delivery and collection point risk assessments and information relating to our seasonal and topical safety awareness campaigns. These systems allow us to see if there are any EU and WTD infringements, so we know if we need to provide specific training to individual drivers.

Our dedicated colleagues make all this possible, which is why we invest heavily in our recruitment, retention and training & development departments. Our colleagues are passionate, professional and committed, in August we were delighted to issue our 100th award to colleagues having achieved over 20 years’ service each.

To help us better understand our colleagues needs, we provide an Annual Colleague Engagement Survey, which colleagues all are invited to take part in, to provide the business with valuable feedback on what we are doing right and what areas they think we can improve upon. Some of the areas in which they felt we were doing really well were the in-house training and national apprenticeship scheme, called out specifically as reasons why they are proud to work at Fowler Welch.

Our Driver Development team is a big part of the success of the business. At Fowler Welch we are committed to understanding and reducing the risks associated to LGV Driving and through this help to create a safer driving environment for all road users. We achieve this by ensuring our drivers are professionally competent, legally compliant and trained to a high standard.

Collectively 2019/20 has been a very good year, with a reduced number of collisions, reduced damage costs, reduced infringement levels and improved MPG thanks to a successful, rigorous, driver training programme. To achieve this we have increased the size of the Driver Development team to be able to provide more training across the business. Their skills knowledge and experience enable them to identify risk and provide more targeted training programmes for individuals.

The company has upgraded the vehicle telematics system to improve safety, compliance and efficiency.  The main focuses have been on 3 key areas;
Driving Safety Together: using technology to keep drivers safe and acting responsibly on the road; demonstrating good driver behaviours; reducing the risk of accidents and injury whilst controlling damage costs
Environmental Social Responsibility: Improving MPG; maximising the efficiency of our fleet; reducing our carbon footprint
Legal Compliance: Reducing driver infringements; educating colleagues on legal requirements; helping them to maintain excellent standards

Our commitment to investing in our sites, our people and technologies demonstrates our approach to continuous improvement across our business. We are delighted to have been recognised for our achievements within the industry and look forward to celebrating excellence with in the supply chain.
